Shonda Rhimes Teams with Dove to Change the Way America Thinks About Beauty

Current news

Today in Entertainment News, Dove’s Real Beauty campaign has released the first in a series of videos made in collaboration with Shonda Rhimes. These films are just the latest in Dove’s attempt to challenge the popular beauty narratives that dominate America.
For that purpose, Rhimes is an ideal candidate. Viewers of her hit TV show How to Get Away With Murder will remember the now infamous scene where Viola Davis’s character removed her wig and makeup, in a rare acknowledgment of the beauty standards that black women especially face.

In an interview with celeb gossip magazine People, Rhimes said:

?I think Viola [Davis]?s wig and the removing of her makeup was a really powerful moment of showing a woman how she truly is when she takes off all of the masks that she holds onto throughout her day to keep herself armored against the world. But I don?t know if I would call it necessarily a pure ?beauty? moment. I think what makes each one of those women beautiful is being powerful, working at all cylinders, loving themselves, feeling really confident. Beauty is greater than your hair or your eyes. It?s a bigger picture.?

In the first video of their collaboration, Dove and Rhimes highlight Fat Girls Dance, a YouTube channel and dance team founded by Cathleen Meredith that challenges the stigma of fat women on the dance floor.
The YouTube channel, like Rhimes’s wig scene, became an instant viral hit. It was a rallying call for women who had never seen themselves represented in such a light.
While this collaboration is not wholly altruistic on Dove’s part — a high profile celebrity endorser can increase company sales by $10 million and generate a .25% stock returns increase according to a 2011 study by Harvard Business School — the company has made a concerted effort to bring change to the way we talk about beauty.
Today in entertainment news, there is no one who has done more to embrace body diversity than Shonda Rhimes. Her shows frequently feature women of all body shapes and sizes, portraying them in a positive light and with grace. At the same time, she’s one of the most repsected names when it comes to Hollywood news.
With this campaign, both Dove and Rhimes can bring their efforts to a new level, and we can hardly wait to see what comes next.
